A 52-year-old man arrested on a no-bail warrant was found unresponsive in his cell.

Khuram Ijaz, a restaurant owner living in Camden Road, Sutton, reported his family's first car, a Mercedes GLA, stolen from his driveway nearly three years ago. Thieves entered the home through a window and took the keys. Approximately one year later, his second car, a BMW X3, was stolen from the same location while the family slept. Belongings including a baby car seat and buggy were inside the family car. While insurance covered the vehicle, some personal items were not. Mr Ijaz stated that police attended after the first theft but found no fingerprints, as the suspects wore gloves. He expressed frustration at receiving no updates on whether the car was recovered.

Another Sutton resident, Jill Whitehead, reported her hybrid Toyota stolen from her front drive about 18 months ago. She stated that police reportedly closed the case within two hours of her reporting the incident. Ms Whitehead suggested that a gang might have used technology to hack key fobs of her car and other nearby vehicles. She also mentioned that other individuals in a local café had experienced similar thefts and chose not to report them, believing no action would be taken. Ms Whitehead voiced concern that the police's rapid case closures could prevent them from identifying links between different incidents.

Metropolitan Police response

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police acknowledged the "significant impact of car theft", including financial loss and inconvenience. The force stated that it continues to reduce neighbourhood crime through targeted patrols in theft hotspots across South London and by using intelligence to identify repeat offenders. The Metropolitan Police also reported that vehicle theft across London has decreased by 21% since April 2025. They encouraged the public to report vehicle thefts as soon as possible to enable a swift response, maximise recovery opportunities, and apprehend offenders.
