Three Essex men jailed for £225,000 Richmond jewellery raid

Three men from Essex have been sentenced to more than 16 years in prison for a violent jewellery shop robbery in Richmond that netted £225,000 in stolen goods. The raid took place in broad daylight on 31 January, when the offenders used a sledgehammer to break the shop window in Paved Court, a small street near Richmond Green.

Deniz Mehmet, 28, of Basildon, received five years. Robert Clarke, 50, from Rochford, was jailed for six years and six months. Lee Ramsey, 46, of Harlow, was sentenced to five years and three months. All three admitted their involvement in the robbery at Kingston Crown Court on 11 July, as reported by the BBC.

How the men were caught

Metropolitan Police officers from the Flying Squad traced the men through a combination of CCTV footage, forensic evidence, and a vehicle believed to have been used in the raid. Clarke and Ramsey were arrested at their homes in the early hours of 31 March. Mehmet was detained on a street in Essex on 8 April.

Detective Superintendent Dan Mitchell, who led the investigation, said the sentences sent a clear message to organised crime groups. "Robberies of this kind cause real concern for residents and businesses," he told the BBC. "They feel the immediate impact of this type of crime."

Impact on Richmond businesses

Richmond Council has not released a statement on the robbery, but local business groups have previously raised concerns about the rise in high-value smash-and-grab thefts. The Met’s Flying Squad, which specialises in serious and organised crime, has increased patrols in commercial areas following a series of similar incidents across London in 2023.

The value of goods stolen in this case is among the highest recorded for a single jewellery raid in south-west London this year. No injuries were reported during the incident, but the shop owner has not publicly commented on the financial or operational impact.

What happens next

The three men are now serving their sentences. The Met has not confirmed whether any of the stolen jewellery has been recovered. Police continue to investigate links between this robbery and other smash-and-grab incidents in London, though no further arrests have been announced.
