Man detained in hospital after fatal Ilford station punch

Ayodele Jamgbadi has been given an indefinite hospital order after causing the death of Transport for London (TfL) worker Jorge Ortega at Ilford station. Mr Ortega, 61, died two days after hitting his head on the platform following a single punch from Mr Jamgbadi in December 2024.

Inner London Crown Court heard that Mr Jamgbadi missed his train and became agitated, kicking an advertising frame and a wall on platform three. Mr Ortega, along with two other TfL employees, had approached Mr Jamgbadi in an attempt to calm him. Mr Jamgbadi then struck Mr Ortega, using his right hand to hit him near the temple area. The force of the blow caused Mr Ortega to fall, hitting the back of his head on the concrete platform.

A post-mortem examination concluded that Mr Ortega died from a severe blunt force head injury, consistent with a heavy impact to the back of the head. Pathologist Dr Michael Parsons stated that the facial injury would have precipitated an accelerated fall. Mr Jamgbadi was arrested on December 5 2024, a day after the attack.

Mr Jamgbadi was charged with murder but was deemed unfit to stand trial due to significant mental health issues. On Wednesday, a jury, sitting as part of a trial of issue at the court, unanimously agreed that Mr Jamgbadi carried out the act that led to Mr Ortega’s death. The British Transport Police confirmed that Mr Jamgbadi was handed a strict hospital order with restrictions.

Under the terms of the order, Mr Jamgbadi will remain detained in hospital for treatment. He cannot be discharged, transferred, or granted leave without the approval of the Secretary of State for Justice or a direction from the Mental Health Tribunal.

Tributes to Jorge Ortega

Mr Ortega's family released a tribute via the police, remembering him as “a loving husband, a devoted father and a wonderful grandfather.” He was a grandfather-of-five. The family stated they miss him every day and wish for him to be remembered for the life he lived, not the manner of his death. They described him as hardworking, kind, generous, caring, funny, wise, and incredibly talented, with a gift for art and drawing.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell of the British Transport Police paid tribute to the dignity and strength shown by Mr Ortega’s family. He acknowledged the length of time it had taken to reach this stage and expressed gratitude for their patience and support. DCI Attwell added that Mr Ortega was carrying out his duties when he became the victim of violence, stating that no one should be subjected to abuse or violence on the rail network.
