Wandsworth Council rejects pretzel advertising replacement

The circular advertising unit, locally known as the 'pretzel', has been in place since 1995. Wildstone Estates, which holds a long lease with Transport for London, submitted a plan for a 25‑metre‑tall timber structure inspired by a tree. The design would have retained four advertising panels, slightly larger than the existing ones. Wildstone Estates acquired the site last year and worked with architects Tate + Co on the concept, according to MyLondon.

Council decision and local response

Council officers had recommended approval, noting no planning objections required refusal, but the committee rejected the application, as reported by MyLondon. Labour councillor Matthew Tiller said, "I believe we should listen to the outcry in defence of the current structure, 'the pretzel' as it's known, personally I think that the replacement structure is messy and incongruous," and Labour councillor Tony Belton added, "I think that we ought to keep these large ads out of the way and out of the sight of drivers who can then concentrate on not running us pedestrians down," both quoted in MyLondon.

TfL submitted a written response highlighting that the existing illuminated display sits on an approach with a history of serious and slight collisions. TfL warned the new boards could increase driver distraction, a point echoed by David Tidley, Head of Transport Strategy, who noted the applicant had found no direct link between past incidents and the current structure, as reported by MyLondon.

What happens next

With the application refused, Wildstone Estates will retain the existing advertising unit. The council has not indicated any further review of the site, and no public funding is involved. Residents may raise future proposals through the standard planning process.
