TfL escalators past lifespan risk commuter shift from Tube, Labour warns

Over a quarter of London Underground escalators are operating beyond their expected lifespan, with £1.3m spent on reactive maintenance in 2025/26. Labour’s transport spokesperson warns that unreliable escalators may deter commuters, threatening the Mayor’s target for 80% of journeys to be made by public transport, walking or cycling by 2041.
