Virgin Trains has secured regulator approval for 20 return services per day on the HS1 line from St Pancras to the Channel tunnel, starting in 2030. Branson intends to spend £700 million on new trains and create 400 jobs, putting pressure on Eurostar’s sole access rights.
Virgin Trains will operate international rail services from London St Pancras to Europe from October 2030, breaking Eurostar’s 36-year monopoly. The Office of Rail and Road approved 20 daily return trips to Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam until 2040, pending final safety and network approvals.
Eurostar advises London passengers to arrive 76 minutes before Standard or Plus trains, 45 minutes for Premier, and 75-90 minutes when returning from Paris. Gates close 30 minutes before departure for all routes, with security checks mandatory before boarding.
