Enfield Old Grammarians FC wins Amateur FA Senior Cup after 119 years

Enfield Old Grammarians Football Club secured its first Amateur FA Senior Cup in the 2024/25 season, marking a historic achievement for the 119-year-old club. The victory caps a period of success under first-team manager Ben Hooke, who rejoined the club in 2021 after initially playing for it as a former Enfield Grammar School pupil.

The club, founded in 1907 as an old boys’ team for Enfield Grammar School alumni, has since expanded to include around 200 players across five competitive sides and a veterans’ team. While its roots remain tied to the school, membership is now open to anyone, whether for competitive or social football.

Recent success and club structure

Hooke, who became vice-chairman in addition to his managerial role, described the club’s recent run of form as its strongest in memory. The first eleven won its league unbeaten and claimed three other trophies alongside the Amateur FA Senior Cup. The club’s third eleven also competes at a high level in the Southern Amateur League, often facing other clubs’ second teams.

The club operates with a democratic structure, Hooke told the Enfield Dispatch. Each team has multiple captains who share responsibilities, rather than relying solely on the manager. Hooke said the administrative workload is substantial but rewarding. "It’s a lot of fun, but a lot of admin," he said.

Social events play a key role in the club’s identity. Members gather for barbecues, casual football tournaments, darts nights and other activities. Hooke said these events help build a sense of community beyond match days. Many players, including Hooke, have known each other since their school days, though the club now includes members from outside the original grammar school network.
