Orbit, born William Wainwright in London, produced Madonna’s 1998 album *Ray of Light*, which won two Grammy Awards: best pop album and best dance recording. The album marked a shift in Madonna’s sound, blending electronica, trip-hop and ambient influences. He later worked on her 2000 album *Music* and co-wrote her 1999 single *Beautiful Stranger*, which earned another Grammy for best song written for visual media.

With Blur, Orbit produced the band’s 1999 album *13*, which included the singles *Tender*, *Coffee & TV* and *No Distance Left to Run*. The album saw the band adopt a darker, more experimental sound. He also contributed to their 2003 album *Think Tank*, producing the track *Sweet Song*.

His work extended beyond these two acts. Orbit collaborated with Pink on the 2003 single *Feel Good Time*, which reached number three in the UK and earned a Grammy nomination. He produced All Saints’ 2000 number one single *Pure Shores*, written for the film *The Beach*, and worked with U2 on their 2002 single *Electrical Storm*.

Tributes from artists and collaborators

Tributes poured in from musicians who worked with Orbit. Mel C, formerly of the Spice Girls, posted on Instagram that it had been an honour to collaborate with him on her 1999 solo album *Northern Star*. She wrote, "Sending all my love." All Saints member Nicole Appleton called him a "treasure in the music industry" and recalled how he made her feel confident in the studio.

Skunk Anansie frontwoman Skin said she had been dancing to his music for decades, while Faithless member Sister Bliss described him as a "genius and pioneer". Modern electro-pop artist Georgia, who worked with Orbit, said it was an honour to collaborate with him and that his music would live on.

A legacy in electronic music

Orbit released 12 studio albums as a solo artist, with his 1999 album *Pieces in a Modern Style* earning critical acclaim and a Grammy nomination. The album, which reimagined classical pieces through electronic production, reached number four in the UK charts. A remix of his version of Samuel Barber’s *Adagio for Strings* became a club hit and peaked at number two in the singles chart.

His influence extended to his work with groups like Bassomatic and Torch Song, where he helped shape the electronic music scene of the 1980s and 1990s. Fellow producer Erol Alkan paid tribute on social media, calling him an "incredible producer" and expressing his condolences.
