Pokémon Go anniversary pop-up draws hundreds to Shoreditch

Ralph met her husband at a Pokémon event 16 years ago, and the couple later themed their wedding around the franchise. A universal language

Ralph described Pokémon as a universal language that bridges gaps between generations and cultures. She has travelled to Japan, the US, and France to attend fan events. "The language of Pokémon is universal," she said. "It brings people back to a happy place, no matter how bad the world is."

Rumeysa Usca, 34, travelled from Leamington with her pomeranian, Boomi. She has played Pokémon Go for four years, using it to walk her dog, stay active, and relive childhood nostalgia. "As kids, we were so happy watching and playing it," she said. "It just brings back those good emotions."

Stacie Smith and her son Rupert, 10, came from Southend in Essex. Smith collected Pokémon cards as a child, while Rupert prefers the trading aspect. The game has helped Rupert, who has autism, leave the house more often. "It’s really important for his mental health," Smith said. "It’s helped him integrate into communities and talk to other people."

Rupert has made friends at school through Pokémon. His father passed down a first-edition holo Mewtwo card, which could fetch £18,000 if kept in pristine condition. Rupert’s copy, however, shows signs of wear. "It’s been well-loved," Smith said.

A billion-pound franchise

The Pokémon franchise, which includes video games, trading cards, TV shows, and merchandise, is the world’s highest-grossing media property. Guinness World Records reports it has generated £110 billion in revenue. Earlier this year, a PSA 10-graded Pikachu Illustrator card sold for £12 million, setting a record for the most expensive trading card ever auctioned.

The event in Shoreditch offered free coffee to players who completed in-game challenges. Attendees could also catch exclusive Pokémon released for the anniversary. For many, the appeal was not about rare cards or high prices. "It doesn’t matter if it’s your first Pokémon or your thousandth," Ralph said. "That little click of the Pokéball will always bring you joy."

The Shoreditch pop-up was a one-day event. The Pokémon Company has not announced further UK celebrations for the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Fans can expect new games, cards, and merchandise to be released later this year, as the company continues its strategy of regular updates.
