Hornsey Rapper Sway Dies Aged 44

Derek Andrew Safo, the British rapper known as Sway, has died at the age of 44. The artist, who was born in Hornsey and raised in north London, was confirmed to have passed away by the MOBO organisation and his friend Kash Ahmad. He died at his home in Ghana, according to Mr Ahmad, who spoke to BBC London. No cause of death has been announced.

Sway, whose birth name was Derek Andrew Safo, made his mark on the music industry by becoming the first unsigned rapper to win a MOBO Award in 2006. He released his debut album, This Is My Demo, in the same year. Later, he signed with Akon's Konvict Music label. In 2012, he achieved a top 10 hit with the single Level Up.

He was also recognised for his distinctive lyrical style, which he described as positive. Despite interest from major music labels, Sway maintained his independence, releasing music through his own label and selling mixtapes directly. He was nominated for the Mercury Prize for his debut album, alongside acts such as Arctic Monkeys and Muse.

In 2010, Sway was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma. He underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy and later went into remission within the same year. He described the diagnosis as feeling like being "dropped in the middle of the sea with no lifejacket." He is survived by his two sons, Jalil and Ammar-Joseph, and twin daughters, Queen-Inaya and Queen-Imara. At the time of his death, he was raising his children as a single parent in Ghana.

Acting and Tributes

Beyond his music career, Sway also pursued acting. He appeared in two episodes of the crime drama series Top Boy and in the 2012 film The Grind. Tributes have been paid by various figures in the music and entertainment industries, including KSI, who described Sway as a "father figure" and thanked him for believing in him. The MOBO Awards stated that Sway "will always hold a special place in Mobo history."
