EastEnders introduces Hawkins family to Albert Square this summer

Albert Square will welcome a new family this summer as EastEnders introduces the Hawkins clan, the estranged relatives of Nicola Mitchell. The BBC soap has cast five actors to play the roles, including Jamie Bamber, Marian McLoughlin and Patricia Potter. Their arrival is expected to reignite old conflicts and add layers of family drama to Walford.

The Hawkins family consists of Nicola’s mother, Rose, played by McLoughlin, and her sisters Gemma and Jodie, portrayed by Potter and Anna Constable. Bamber will take on the role of Ned, Gemma’s husband, while Felix Uff will play their son, Ryder. The characters are set to make their first appearance in episodes airing over the coming months.

Family dynamics set to shake Walford

Ben Wadey, executive producer of EastEnders, said the Hawkins family would bring a mix of loyalty and unresolved tensions to the square. He described the family as fiercely protective of one another but noted that decades of estrangement from Nicola had left deep fractures. Wadey told The Standard that the audience could expect significant developments as the family’s story unfolds.

Nicola Mitchell, played by Laura Doddington, first appeared in Walford in 2024. She is the recent ex-wife of Teddy Mitchell and the mother of Barney and Harry Mitchell. Nicola is currently in a relationship with George Knight, portrayed by Colin Salmon, and gave birth to their daughter, Ivy, in April. Recent episodes have shown Nicola struggling to balance motherhood with George’s emotional turmoil following the death of his abusive adoptive father.

Actors reflect on joining ‘iconic’ show

When 12-year-old me rushed home from school in 1985 to catch the very first episode of EastEnders, I could never have dreamed that one day I’d be walking onto the iconic Albert Square as a character myself.

Patricia Potter, who has appeared in medical dramas such as Holby City and Doctors, said she was ‘delighted’ to join EastEnders. In a statement to The Standard, she called it a ‘joy and a privilege’ to work with the cast and crew. Potter added that she was excited and grateful for the opportunity.

Bamber, known for roles in NCIS, Beyond Paradise and Battlestar Galactica, described joining EastEnders as a privilege he never anticipated. He told The Standard that he did not take the opportunity lightly and was eager to contribute to what he called a ‘crown jewel’ of the BBC.

Marian McLoughlin, who will play Rose, said she felt ‘lucky’ to join the cast. The actress, who has appeared in soaps such as Doctors, Hollyoaks and Casualty, told The Standard that she never expected such an opportunity in her 70s. McLoughlin had a minor role in EastEnders during the 1990s.

Anna Constable, who has Noonan Syndrome, a rare genetic condition, said she never imagined a disabled actress could land a role like Jodie. In her statement to The Standard, she described herself as ‘loud and proud’ and ready to take on the character’s challenges. Felix Uff, who will play Ryder, called joining EastEnders a ‘real privilege’ and praised the show as a staple of British culture.

What viewers can expect

Little is known about the Hawkins family’s backstory beyond their connection to Nicola Mitchell. Their introduction comes as Nicola navigates life as a new mother while supporting George Knight through his grief. The family’s arrival is expected to test Nicola’s relationships and bring long-buried conflicts to the surface.
