Grass fire near Hainault Road in Romford damages three hectares

A grass fire broke out near Hainault Road in Romford on the afternoon of 5 August 2026, requiring the response of six fire engines and approximately 40 firefighters from the London Fire Brigade. The blaze, which started shortly after 1 pm, scorched around three hectares of grassland before crews brought it under control.

Firefighters from Ilford, Hainault, and Harold Hill fire stations were dispatched to the scene. The London Fire Brigade confirmed that the fire was extinguished by 3:04 pm, two hours after the first emergency call was received.

Specialised equipment deployed

The London Fire Brigade used a Terrain Support Vehicle to assist in tackling the fire. The vehicle, equipped with off-road capability, transported additional equipment directly to the site. It carried 475 litres of water, a backpack blower, ear defenders, wildfire beaters, and misting lance technology.

A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said the backpack blowers, which function similarly to leaf blowers, were used to push flames back into already burnt areas. This method allows firefighters to contain wildfires more efficiently. Wildfire beaters, which deprive flames of oxygen, were also employed.

Advice for residents

Following the incident, the London Fire Brigade issued safety advice for residents. They urged anyone who discovers a wildfire to stay calm and dial 999 immediately. The Brigade also warned against using barbecues, including disposable ones, in parks, public spaces, or on balconies.

Residents are advised to ensure cigarettes are fully extinguished and disposed of safely. The London Fire Brigade emphasised that carelessness with open flames or smoking materials can lead to similar incidents, particularly during dry weather conditions.
