Enfield Council removes e-scooter and e-bike bays

Enfield Council has begun removing 22 micromobility parking bays installed in the south of the borough. The council stated the bays, designed for e-bikes and e-scooters, have been significantly underused and occasionally vandalised since their installation 18 months ago.

The money will be managed by City Hall, MOPAC and TfL and is part of a £37m strategy to curb violence against women and girls across the capital.

The parking facilities were put in place ahead of an anticipated expansion of the Lime hire scheme into the borough. However, Lime has not yet extended its operations into Enfield, leading to the low utilisation of the designated bays. A council spokesperson noted that while Haringey Council has an agreement with Lime, potential overspill into Enfield has not been routine.

The council spokesperson added: “Allocating space to help manage it has not proven to be necessary. The council has decided to relocate the cycle parking facilities to locations where they can be better utilised.”

The decision to remove the bays has drawn criticism from the local cycling lobby group Better Streets for Enfield. A spokesperson for the group expressed disappointment, stating the removal occurred without consultation. They argued that the bays will be needed if Transport for London introduces a wider e-bike hire scheme across the capital.

Better Streets for Enfield also raised concerns that removing parking bays could hinder cycling in areas with lower car ownership. The group stated: “We hope that the council will be providing alternative cycle parking to cater for their needs.” The council confirmed that 12 schools have expressed interest in relocating the bays to support active travel to and from their sites.

The council spokesperson also indicated that Transport for London is exploring legislative measures for hire operators to better manage parking and reduce pavement obstructions. The council stated its priority is ensuring existing assets are used effectively and provide value for money.
